Bhante Uparatana Maha Thera is the Founder, Head Monk and the Spiritual Director of the International Buddhist Center.

Bhante Uparatana was ordained as a Buddhist monk under the guidance of Venerable Dr. Henepola Gunaratana (founder and head of the Bhavana Society and author of "Mindfulness in Plain English".) and Muruddeniye Ratanapala in 1966 in Ranwalagedara Viharaya, Sri Lanka.

He has taught Vipassana meditation in the Washington D.C. area since 1982. He has served as the Buddhist Chaplain at the American University ( Washington D.C. campus) since 1989, where he teaches meditation.
 
Bhante Uparatana is a founding member of the Bhavana Society meditation retreat and monastic center in West Virginia.
